How to Respond to a Counter Offer Before you hand in your resignation one of the things that you must be prepared for is what your response will be if your current employer comes to you with a counter offer. After deciding that you want to leave your current place of work, getting through the interview process with a prospective employer and negotiating a better pay and benefits package than the one you are presently on, what do you do if your current employer agrees to match this offer or even better comes back with a more lucrative package? When it comes to counter offers there are a few things that you should consider carefully before accepting or declining. We have put together some useful advice to help you get into the right frame of mind to consider your options carefully before making a final decision. Weigh up the pros and cons: A counter offer is made by a current employer in order to try and keep an employee who has adequate skills and experience within the company by attempting to match or better the offer received from the employee by a prospective employer. Your current employer might be better off in the short term if you stay with them. They won’t have to spend time and money trying to source a new replacement and train new staff up. They will often use a number of tactics to try and persuade you to withdraw your notice. For example moving your annual pay rise forward or suggesting that the opportunities or challenges you are looking for lie within their company. In most cases your employee probably hasn’t already come to you beforehand offering you these perks or benefits and this should be something you think about before making a final decision, as your resignation could impact on you even if you do decide to stay. Whilst working for your current company you may have formed friendships with your work colleagues and when you receive a counter offer it can often be hard to turn it down as you do not want to inconvenience them or the company and depart on a sour note. When you are weighing up the pros and cons of staying or leaving the company you work for, think carefully about what your prospects for the future are if you stay and consider what you already know about the organisation, such as how the company works and how they treat their staff. It is important to remember that moving to another job rarely means that you have to refrain from staying in contact with the people you have formed emotional relationships with. In the long run the most suitable option for you will also more than likely be the most beneficial for your current employer, whether or not this is immediately apparent to them at the time. Why did you want to leave in the first place? It is important when considering a counter offer that you always keep in mind what your reasons were for pursuing a job with another company in the first place. Taking salary aside for a moment the new position could offer: childcare, healthcare or pension schemes flexible working hours freedom to travel on an international basis greater opportunities for development project variety training initiatives Whatever your reasons are for wanting to leave your current employer it is crucial that you remember what they are and think rationally about what is best for you as an individual, before you respond to a counter offer. Coming to a decision: If you do decide to decline a counter offer it is important that you stand by your decision. Be respectful and thank your employer for making the opportunity available to you but also emphasize your decision to resign. You may want to tell your employer the reasons behind your intentions but do not feel like you have to justify your choice to them. At the very least you can say that you have considered both options carefully and have come to a conclusion based on what you feel is best for you in your career. Make it clear that you are not looking for another counter offer and that you hope to depart amicably on a good note. On the other hand, if you do decide to accept the counter offer and remain with your current employer after thinking carefully about both options, it is important to remember that your employer will always remember your attempted resignation and may consider you a fidelity risk in the future. In some cases, employers will use counter offers as a stall device to buy them some time in getting a replacement for your position and even if this isn’t the case you will need to work hard to regain your employer’s trust and faith in you. Likewise, if your employer has only put forward a counter offer because of the threat of you leaving and not because they believe you deserve a pay rise or better working conditions then you may lose faith in them as a fair and equitable company. Exercise Does More Than You Think Ok, you know it; you need to get into shape. Its time to stop making excuses that you dont have the time and as they say, Just Do It. Its no longer embarrassing to go to a fitness club. You get people of all age groups there for the same reason you are, to get into shape. Places like Fitness19   have a wide range of options including weights, bikes, yoga and dance classes to keep you from getting bored. Exercise is more than a weight loss program When you exercise you know, sweat and get your heart rate up youre helping your body release toxins in so many forms. The weight and toning of the body are obvious. In addition to that, exercising also reduces your stress levels, rids your body of anxiety, makes you happy, improves your energy, restores confidence and helps you to fall asleep. When you work up a sweat from pushing your body you release a chemical into the brain called dopamine which make you feel good. You leave each session feeling satisfied and alive. This goes on long afterward, giving you the energy to cook dinner, take care of children or work on a report. Exercise in any form is better than nothing If you simply cant find the time to enroll in a gym, there are other ways to get your heart beat up and improve your appearance and your overall health. You can work out from home. If you dont have room for a bike or weights, you can do yoga or buy an exercise video. Many highly acclaimed fitness  celebrities have videos to help you get into shape that you can watch and work out at the same time. Or, if you prefer, you can take up jogging, or speed walking. Exercise can be whatever you can work into your schedule. Find something that works for you and you will stick with it. Get into shape now and make the aging process easier As you age you lose muscle tone and elasticity in your skin. Theres no way of preventing this from happening, but there are ways to limit the effect it has on you. By taking on excellent diet and exercise habits at a younger age youll help to slow the aging process and defy the laws of physics. You can, of course, begin an exercise class at any age and reap the benefits, but the earlier you start, the longer youll retain the results. Diet and exercise, a winning combination When it comes to your health, combining a well-balanced diet with rigorous exercise two to three times a week will keep you looking good and feeling good on the inside and outside. One without the other isnt going to give you the results you want to think, feel energized and have a toned body. By eliminating the fast processed foods, candies, cookies and chips and replacing them with home cooked meals, granola, whole grains and yogurt your body will release the toxins and shed the weight slowly. Not only will you lose the weight, but by changing your diet youll keep it off as well. An active lifestyle makes you feel energized and ready to tackle anything that comes your way. There are multiple methods or ideas you can use to learn a new foreign language. In this article I will share some commonly used methods that people use to learn a foreign language.IMMERSIONevalMy friend Tom wanted to learn French. This had been on his bucket list for a very long time. He decided to do something about it, and plunge into action.Tom inquired with the local schools colleges and sought their advice . They recommended French Immersion if he was serious.The local school suggested that through Language Immersion, Tom will be able to accelerate his learning of French.Through the program, the school will find a family in Quebec with whom Tom can stay for few weeks or months, and during that stay he will learn the language. In other words, immersing himself in the environment will motivate him to quickly grab the language.Tom took the suggestion and headed to Chicoutimi Quebec and stayed with a local family for couple of months. He had no choice but to speak French because the locals in that town mostly only spoke French.After his 2 months, Tom was glad that he took the program. It was a valuable investment of his time money. Since he was away from home, and he did not have anyone to speak English â€" he learnt French quickly.There are many resources available for this online. Most schools universities provide resources/directions regarding language immersion. If you can invest the time If you find the Immersion process to formal ,the other alternative is to travel A friend on mine, Rob went to Thailand there for a vacation, then he realized how much he loved the local language and cult ure After thorough research I chose a Martial Arts School in Nicaragua. My plan was to stay there for 2 months and train non-stop all day. I spoke to the Program Director, booked my trip and then packed my bags and headed out.I knew that Nicaragua was a Spanish speaking country, but I was under the impression that English also was spoken there I learnt French in High School â€" try speaking 2 sentences to me in French, I will probably stare you at like a Deer caught in the Headlights. Repetition and practice sharpens your skills, and helps you retain all the vocabulary you acquired. Nothing beats live interactions with a real human-being.5. TECHNOLOGY TO THE RESCUEEver seen the famous iPhone ad in 2009 “There is an app for that”. Exactly!! there are apps for learning languages. Thanks to technology, you don’t necessarily have to enroll in a structured classroom type of environment.evalRosetta Stone has set the gold standard for audio/video based Language Learning. You can learn pretty much any language using their CD or DVD programs. However, it comes with a hefty price tag. I personally have never used their programs, but they have a strong reputation.Duolingo is a free mobile app and website (and my favorite) for learning languages. Although, the choices are limited regarding how many languages are available â€" you can’t beat the price. FREE!!The app consists of many tests, courses also uses Gamification to speed up the l earning process. And you can also compete with your friends.Duolingo came to my rescue during my stay in Nicaragua. I am currently learning Portuguese on Duolingo. It is my biased opinion â€" to quickly learn new words, sentences,etc. this app cannot be beat. Terrific! Now…what about your cover letter? Most people overlook the importance of this key item when sending out their resume. Dont miss your chance to communicate with your potential future boss. The cover letter helps make it happen. Tips on Getting Your Cover Letter Noticed 1 Be specific and demonstrate knowledge. Employers read many resumes and cover letters, especially for prime positions. Yours should specifically address the position you hope to land an interview for, and explain how your skills and experience qualify you for that job. Dont send mass mail, all-purpose types of resumes and cover letters these frequently end up in the recycle bin. 2 Address the letter to the person who will be reading it. Avoid Dear Sir or Madam or To Whom it May Concern whenever possible. Even better, show that you are familiar with the company. Reference a recent merger, new product line, or other noteworthy event as evidence that you follow the company’s success and would make a valuable part of the team. 3 Play up the positives; explain or downplay the negatives. Lets say you are a recent college graduate without a lot of job experience. Describe how your activities and experiences in school helped prepare you for your career, while avoiding weak phrases like willing to learn. Or, suppose you have time gaps in your employment that you feel are necessary to explain. Use your cover letter to explain the gap, and put a positive spin on it if possible (i.e., You will notice I was not employed between March 2006 and August 2006.
